In industries like logistics, safety isn’t just a box to tick – it’s an operational priority. DHL, a global leader in logistics, recognised this need for enhanced safety and compliance at their East Midlands Airport (EMA) sortation hub, one of the largest and busiest hubs in the UK. Handling high volumes and working within complex facilities means elevated walkways, conveyor belts, and high-risk maintenance areas are part of daily operations. To ensure safe practices and emergency preparedness in this environment, DHL partnered with REAX for a comprehensive work at height and rescue solution.

In this blog, we’re giving you an inside look at how we tackled this challenge, but for the full, detailed breakdown, you can view the complete case study PDF here↗︎

Delivering Bespoke Safety Audits and Training

The partnership kicked off with a full, in-depth site audit by REAX, which carefully assessed each unique risk at the sortation hub. From conveyor belt systems to elevated walkways, REAX’s team examined every area requiring maintenance or potential rescue operations. This analysis laid the groundwork for a tailored safety and rescue strategy suited specifically to DHL’s facility layout and risk profile.

A standout feature of this collaboration was the bespoke work at height training program REAX provided. Developed to meet the unique requirements of DHL’s workforce, the training covered everything from the proper use of PPE and safe working techniques near moving machinery, to precise protocols for accessing and working on elevated platforms.

Customised Rescue Plans and Equipment Provision

For DHL, generic solutions simply wouldn’t suffice. REAX created customised rescue plans for each operational zone within the sortation hub, accounting for every detail, from anchor points to step-by-step emergency procedures. These tailored rescue protocols provided DHL employees with clear visual guides and instructions, empowering teams to act quickly and confidently in case of an incident.

To further reinforce safety, REAX equipped the facility with specialised safety gear, including work positioning harnesses and rescue kits designed for the unique challenges of a logistics hub. This approach ensured that DHL’s teams had the tools they needed to handle work-at-height tasks effectively and safely.

Minimal Disruption, Maximum Safety

The phased implementation of training and equipment ensured DHL could maintain its 24/7 operations while prioritising safety upgrades. By conducting training in small groups and adhering to a tailored schedule, REAX worked alongside DHL to improve safety without impacting productivity.

The result? A seamless integration of advanced safety measures that upheld DHL’s commitment to operational efficiency.

The collaboration has led to tangible results: enhanced compliance, increased readiness for rescue scenarios, improved safety standards, and a culture that prioritizes proactive risk management. REAX continues to support DHL with ongoing safety training and equipment inspections to maintain these standards as operations evolve.
