REAX Wins Multi-Year Tender to Provide Tailored Rope Rescue Training for Sellafield Fire and Rescue Teams

Sellafield, located on the coast of Cumbria, UK, is one of the most complex nuclear sites globally. With a history that dates back to the 1940s, the site evolved from a munitions factory to one of the world’s first commercial nuclear power stations. Today, Sellafield focuses on decommissioning, nuclear waste management, and safeguarding against legacy hazards.

Given the site’s high-risk nature, Sellafield’s Fire and Rescue teams play a crucial role in ensuring safety. These teams must be ready to respond to emergencies in everything from radioactive facilities to multi-level industrial structures.

In this blog, we’re giving you an inside look at how we tackled this challenge, but for the full, detailed breakdown, you can view the complete case study PDF here↗︎

REAX’s Role in Enhancing Safety at Sellafield

In 2021, REAX secured a prestigious three-year contract to provide bespoke Rope Rescue Operator and Rope Rescue Supervisor training for Sellafield’s Fire and Rescue Service. With Sellafield’s unique environment and risks, tailored rescue training was vital.

Key Components of the Training Program:

Rope Rescue Operator Training:

  • Technical Expertise: REAX provides practical, hands-on training in rope rescue techniques, equipping the rescue teams with the skills needed to extract individuals from confined spaces or difficult-to-access locations.
  • Advanced Equipment Use: The training includes the safe use of advanced rescue equipment, such as rope systems, pulleys, and harnesses.
  • Real-World Scenarios: Simulating real-life emergencies that may arise at Sellafield, REAX prepares teams for high-risk scenarios, including confined spaces and hazardous materials.

Rope Rescue Supervisor Training:

  • Leadership Skills: Supervisors receive additional training to enhance decision-making and leadership skills during rescue operations.
  • Incident Command: Emphasizing coordination, the supervisor training ensures that teams are managed effectively during emergencies, with adherence to safety protocols.

Customised Training for Sellafield:

  • Tailored Rescue Plans: The training is designed to address Sellafield’s specific challenges, focusing on rescue operations in hazardous environments, such as areas with radioactive materials.
  • Compliance with Standards: REAX ensures that all training aligns with national and international safety standards, keeping Sellafield’s emergency response teams fully compliant.

Results:

REAX’s bespoke rope rescue training has strengthened Sellafield’s emergency response capabilities, ensuring that its Fire and Rescue teams are prepared to handle even the most complex and hazardous rescue operations. This partnership supports Sellafield’s mission to maintain safety and protect both personnel and the environment.
